El color del ruido: la nueva exposición de Virginia Rivas en el CAB

The Color of Noise: Virginia Rivas's new exhibition at the CAB

Autor: Romina Llaguno

On October 3rd, the CAB opened its new exhibition: The Color of Noise by Virginia Rivas. A proposal based on the classification of sounds in the human sound spectrum through different shades of color.

In The Color of Noise , visual and auditory waves intertwine, finding common ground, which Rivas calls the density of their power. Thus, the artist attributes white to uniform noises, and different low and high tones to different shades of the spectrum.

Five colors for five distinctive sounds structure five installations, independent and complementary to each other: white, pink, gray, green, and brown. These colors correspond to sounds commonly used for therapeutic purposes for problems such as insomnia, concentration, anxiety, and tinnitus (the hearing of noises inside the ear).

Virginia Rivas (Madrid, 1981) delights with her in-depth investigation into the possible spectrographies of sounds. A complex personal and professional journey by the artist, filled with theory, notes, electronic explorations, experiments, and a sensitivity to the chromatic palette, seeks to reveal the complexity of this process.

Curated by Javier del Campo, in the installation Rivas attributes the color pink to the sound of ocean waves, green to the sound of rain, gray to electronic interference, brown to the tension of natural agents, and white to static signals. This establishes a sensory synchrony that allows for balanced stimulation, both chromatic and sonic. The warmth of these tones contrasts with the opposite side of the color wheel. "Blue and violet noises, being very high-pitched, are more unpleasant and do not have those uses." – Virginia Rivas

The color of noise
invites interaction through translucent textiles, transforming the view of the space into a superposition of layers that alter the color of the rest of the installations.

With this new exhibition, inaugurated at the CAB in Burgos , artist Virginia Rivas continues her solid professional career, exploring the connection between the individual and the environment without limiting herself to a single one. In her work, painting, video, and installation engage in dialogue with the viewer, whom Virginia Rivas highlights as an active agent through their involvement, interpretation, and interaction with the environment. An artistic trajectory from which Virginia Rivas crafts her own sociological discourse, starting from an intimate and sensitive sphere and materializing through light, color, and sound.
