A MOVING ATMOSPHERE

Nebulae are concentrations of gas and dust in space. Some correspond to the remnants of matter from a dying star; others are the matter of a newly born star. These unfinished phenomena are possible thanks to the vastness of space, the void surrounding them. Where they form, there are no defined bodies. Nor do they orbit anything. We will never be able to answer the question of what it would be like to inhabit the heart of these clouds of matter suspended in interstellar space. We can, however, approach the experience of the unknown and mysterious contained within the phenomenon. The unknown always sustains, in turn, something enigmatic and disconcerting, fragile and tense, unprecedented and unpredictable.

The installation series entitled Nebula , the work of artist and architect Guillermo Escribano (Burgos, 1993), introduces us to new ways of experiencing and inhabiting the architecture of religious worship. Light and fog generate an enveloping atmospheric field where everything is tinged with a single mass of color. A dialogue between Castilian heritage and contemporary times, where the spatiality and internal distribution of these buildings are experienced from a totally new perspective. What was there is no longer there; what it meant is no longer there today.

As individuals, we always move in a certain direction, toward a fixed course. Nebulosa is simply about being present in this spatial and artistic experience. The spaciousness of the interior and the light allow us to truly discover the silhouettes of our bodies and persuade us by sharpening our senses beyond sight . Only a thin line of laser light and the very scale of our selves give us a perspective of the immensity of the interior. This process of unification and democratization of the interior is heightened if we look upward.

In churches, we encounter the silence inherent in respect for worship. These architectures possess the ability to soundproof and isolate us from the outside world, generating a conscious experience. In Nebulosa , our presence—differentiated from our attendance—implies a willingness to lose ourselves. We actively engage in that slowing of pace and the uncertainty of what might happen, focusing on the process of experimentation rather than a final goal. This lack of guidance allows us not only to experience the installation through vision, with our eyes, but also to open ourselves to a synesthetic process where we are embraced by sensations and emotions only possible through the association our brain completes when we perceive a color.

With Nebula , Guillermo Escribano, who is part of Escribano Arrieta Studio, seeks to intercept us by generating a monochromatic visual field where gravity vanishes and only the lightness of our own body in motion remains.
